From the chapter 16-18 from the "Great Expectation" by Charles Dickens, I've come to a conclusion that in 19th century, status plays a major role in the society. It shows when Pip is determined to be a gentleman rather than being a blacksmith because he doesn't want Estella to look down on him anymore.The language that was used by Estella towards Pip are such as "low middle-class boy", "naive jack" and many others shows how Estella look down on Pip just because he was a poor boy.
Thus, this shows that the 19th century English society judges people on their status, wealth and the way they dress.
