Gothic Literature and Frankenstien

Gothic literature usually is a combination of HORROR and ROMANCE. The function as a cult literature during late 18th century and early 19th century. The origin literature work about gothic literature came from an author name Horace Walpole with his novel 'The Castle of Toranto' in 1764. There are few gothic literature elements that can be detect such as the element of fear, supernatural, ghosts, villians, darkness, death, madness and secrets. Famous gothic literature works are Frankenstien(Mary Shelley,1818), Melmoth the Wonderer(Charles Maturin,1820), and Wuthering Heights(Emily Bronte,1847),The Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr Hyde( Robert Louis Stevenson,1886) and Dracula(Bram Stoker,1897)

There are few gothic literature characteristics in Frankenstien for instance characteristic of:
  • Melodrama: stereotype, moral polarisation and one dimensions.
  • Exoticism: remote locations
  • Alienation: The genre's interest and identity set apart from society.
The other title for Frankenstein by Mary Shelley novel is The Modern Prometheus. Prometheus is a mythical creature in Greek myth, which is explain as both is a creature created by Zeus himself. Thus Frankenstein can be compare to Prometheus because he is created by another being and the resemblance of physical traits of Prometheus as told in the Greek myth with Frankenstein is almost similar. They are created with a larger body frame. Because in the Greek myth Prometheus is the foretold doom of Zeus, Frankenstein is also the doom for its creator Victor Frankenstein. The mistake of creating the creature are later then experience both the creator of Prometheus and Frankenstein. That is the relation that can be found between the mythical creature Prometheus and the creature that Victor Frankenstein had created.
